Though there have been significant gains in literacy rates, large gender, social and regional disparities in literacy levels persist. The gains in literacy levels are due to success of the adult education programmes and improvements in primary schooling. However, there is a further need to enhance the literacy levels of the socially marginalized groups and those living in rural areas through interventions of adult education programmes and open schooling systems. This theme seeks to elicit views on how we achieve faster progress in reducing the existing disparities in literacy levels.

The efforts are not enough in this regard. The working of open schools should be accelerated the govt. and non govt. institutions should be equally considered. The pvt. institutions should show accountability retd. teachers can be utilized for this. The media technology should be introduced in adult education in villages and juggi clusters. Literacy and values should be balanced also rights and duties should be balanced for women empowering education.

Illiteracy is the biggest problem India facing today. we "One Library Per Village " participated in Digital Literacy week in 2 libraries in Kerala . We got tremendous response details http://digitalliteracyweek.blogspot.in/ . We followed SOLE (self organised learning environment ) when class divided into small learning groups, most of participants where housewives. Libraries are best way to empower villagers. www.olpv.org

At present mostly there are no +2 education in Villages. Only up to 10th standard available in Zilla Parashad Schools. +2 (intermediate) course available in Junior Colleges in cities captured by corporate managements. This leads to end up of rural students specially by girls by 10th standard. This should change. Up to 12th standard (CBSE) shall be ensured in the same school campus. After secondary school education it can be left over to continue higher education or not like in foreign countries.

Instead of giving reservations by caste in education. Give by under developed , developed villages... Bcoz most of bengaluru sc/st or backward classes are capable without reservations.... Pls make tier 1,2,3,4,5 cities.. Cities which come under tier 4,5 give reservations based on caste but not to tier 1,2,3..

I feel that the government should figure out a plan to help organizations that are already doing this. Ekal Vidyalaya is one such organization. They focus on Functional Literacy. I think this is a beautiful concept that needs to be promoted by the government. ekal.org is their website. They go farther than just education and also look at health, development and empowerment.
