National Highway Authority of India currently is planning to build a citizen facing interface which can cater to all highway related needs of NH commuters. NHAI already has an Android mobile application called Sukhaad Yatra (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rsawh.nhia&hl=en_IN&gl=US) which needs to be upgraded and advanced further.

Citizens are invited to share their ideas on how the Sukhad Yatra app can be improved with additional features/ integrations to better service the needs of citizens. The end outcome is to improve the experience of NH commuters and build a robust medium of 2-way communication.

The tool will not be limited to but can cover the following areas:
● Informing users of construction and maintenance activities
● Allowing users to register complaints pertaining to the condition of the highway or highway activities such as toll (for eg. If wait times for a toll gate are too long or if FasTag is not working at a gate)
● Allow users to rate highways on various characteristics of the highway around their experience as a rider (on both negative and positive characteristics of experience, for example whether the NH offers a scenic route or view)
● Allow user to access emergency and first response services on the highway
● Allow users to access information on wayside amenities, petrol pumps, EV stations etc. Information about location of facilities along the route can be searched on Google Maps but this is hard to access for non smartphone users.
● Allow users to report traffic congestion, accidents, debris, toll-relates issues, request EV charging points etc to local command centres (Eg. Waze)
● The interface should be able to cater to user-needs of commuters with and without smartphones
● The interface should have a strong focus on UX, intuitive and centred around the day-to-day needs and experience of highway users.

The interface can also operate as a platform through which multiple existing private and public applications can link to such as NH’s toll free number, toll management system etc or travel related apps (MapMyIndia, Google Maps etc) which already have a high user-base. The platform should leverage strengths of existing IT applications and not reinvent where necessary.

The design should cater to all kinds of NH users such as:
● Commercial (trucking etc) who may or may not have a smartphone and a user design which caters to their needs
● Personal long-distance commuter which may not be as frequent but may have access to smartphones
● Local residents who live around the highways and use it more frequently than private long distance commuters

Submissions to this can be in the form of app mock-ups/ prototypes, presentations, concept notes on platform and other interfaces, list of desired features by commuters etc.

Tha last date of submission of ideas is 15th June 2022.

Despite so many efforts for so many years, NHAI is not successful in avoiding water logging on NH-48 (Delhi- Jaipur Highway). Even spots are identified and it is claimed that there would not be any water logging this year. But, small amount of rain and whole system collapses. This is what happened today on 23rd May. In my opinion, all slab covers on side drains of Iffco chowk area near MDI shall be removed to find the real cause of water logging. I had seen construction debris being dumped in drains during road and flyover construction. This construction debris has choked the drains and has to be physically removed by removing slab covers.

App should properly inform the road passengers about the potholes, road accidents, traffic jams, diversion due to construction work, passenger facilitation centre, time taken to cross toll plaza, rates, distance etc.

App should be widely publicized through online and offline means. Put up hoardings all over the highways. So that more and more road travelers can download Pleasant Journey.

It is planned to do away with physical toll plazas. This will avoid queues at toll plazas and road users will not have to stop at toll plazas as GPS based toll deduction system will be implemented. Now steps are required. 1) All vehicles shall have to be be GPS enabled. 2) GPS tracker has to be quite accurate to avoid wrong deduction of toll. Since vehicles will be tracked through GPS, the NHAI App can monitor the speed of the moving vehicles and if speed is exceeded on that particular speed limits stretch warning signals or challan can be generated. There may be some difficulty in this arrangement as tolls on State Highways may not be GPS based. So, existing arrangements of toll deduction would need to continue. People have to maintain existing toll payment modules as well. If states are persuaded to start GPS based tolling system then actual advantages can be reaped in and users need not to maintain two payment modules.

This concept is not on highway user's app. NHAI in the north have designed highways as emergency runway for airforce. It's an important step in case of wars.We should create more of them all over the country. A commercial airport runway is between 2.5km to 4 km. On an aircraft carrier the length is around 100 to 150 meters with wire rope arrangements. We should keep equipment foundations ready for quick set up at short notice on highways with hydraulic devices for rope arrangements.Run way length can be increased to 200 mtrs+ for initial reversal of thrust before getting on the ropes. There are no constraints on roads for length unlike aircraft carrier. The road dividers should be dismantlable type to make it wider with more lanes. Movement of rope equipment can happen in shipping containers.Camouflaged bunker hangers could be made depending on the locations & topography. The idea is the highway becomes multi purpose & secretive as take off happens from unknown areas at short notice.
