India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

We should have an education system that allows freedom of expression right from childhood like they have in USA, we should have proper study program even for becoming a prime minister of india like they have it in USA for presidency, and the most important thing awareness among the entire nation about the rapid growing population, we need to stop as we don't have the infrastructure to provide security or other resources to such large population, it's good that we want to make it happen but

We need to improve distribution and storage facilities. In improving storage facilities Gram Panchayats should be made responsible and accountable at village/ district level. To improve distribution we need to create co-operative societies among farmers which should be encouraged and supported by Governments but operated and monitored by farmers whose livelihood is at stake.

Middle men are the greatest exploiters of the farmers. procurement of the agricultural product thru co-operative societies/women societies and construction of local cold storage facilities are immediate requirement to save the farmer as well as the consumer. In each panchyat a procurement co-operative society should be established from which the civil supplies department buy to for consumer supply.
