India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

( 4 ) Timely Reliable Weather forecasting helps producers to time their farm-operations. Or, instead of one Big retailer swallowing the whole pie at one go, no. of operational steps are brought down to minimum to reach same goal. In the process, middlemen will have to go. Political will has to be there as, they often harm rather than serve consumers/ Nation the same way handing-over all things to ONE MAJOR RETAIL PLAYER! Forms of FIXING Agri. MKt. pricing system tried so far only harm not help!

( 3 ) The existence of middle-men in supply-chain is detrimental to losses of produce, and also non-remunerative prices to both farmers & consumers, alike. We can attain a stated-goal here-onwards thro' a series of steps as follows; 1. States establishing selling-points under Co-Ops; farmers to form own Co-ops; Centre allowing cold-chains to come-up on BOOT or other methodology near major production- centres; use of modern communication methods to simplify reach of producers to consumer-Makts.

( 2 ) FDI limits were tweaked, but none could say ( in Former Govts.) categorically that, back-end facilities such as cold-storages, roads, good prices, maintain real-good competitive atmosphere w/out one Brand over-powering all others,inculcating good-farm-practices etc are a Must, with at least 50% well-documented investments, and also solve post-harvest losses.Now "Retail FDI" has been pushed to back-burner.Next best thing would be, ask FARMERS to form co-operatives, to attain same goals.

( 1 )There were ( still 'are') places where weekly Haats ( markets) held.These ensure meeting of farmers with consumers directly. Now, why should a particular produce move faster? = Due to 'Taste' versus 'Freshness' Vs 'cheap Price' vs 'Quality' Vs 'Preference/ liking of buyers' Vs 'Minimum efforts to purchase'( like in haats) Vs 'Best product of the season',(say,mangoes), is it not?"FDI in retail" was thought to solve all of these at one go. Problem arose when many saw loss of business itself!

The totally spoilt vegetables and fruits could be used for producing bio-fuels and sold back to farmers for use in tractors or to the rural industries or may be given to alcohol breweries to brew some exotic alcohols out of fermented rotten vegetables and fruits as a last resort

i think we should look into our Arsenal. Pickle and chutney of India is globally valuable. Also these are the method to preserve the food. So why not do a export of Dry chutney powder or Pickles.

One solution to this problem is food processing / packaging. If we encourage large or medium scale food packaging industries, we can create a surplus chain where surplus fruits/ vegetables cab be processed and packaged for a later consumption. If regulated by the government, we can build a system where packaged foods are available in all parts of country. It could be used for disaster management also.
