In December 2014 the United Nations declared 21st June as ‘International Day of Yoga’ after 177 nations across all continents of the world co-sponsored a resolution seeking the same.

When the resolution was adopted, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed immense joy on this and said that Yoga has the power to bring the entire humankind together. It may be recalled that the Prime Minister had mooted such an idea during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2014.

You are requested to provide inputs on the following aspects relating to the marking of the first ever ‘International Day of Yoga’.

(1) How can the ‘International Day of Yoga’ be celebrated at the UN forum?

(2) Suggest creative ways in which the ‘International Day of Yoga’ can be celebrated at the world stage.

(3) What are ways in which we can mark the ‘International Day of Yoga’ across the length and breadth of India?

Best inputs and suggestions would be sent to the Prime Minister himself and would also be utilized.

(1) The purpose of the UN is based on promoting peace and security for all. The purpose of yoga is to UNITE WITHIN, the theme of this event would be PEACE WITHIN. The UN could hold a panel where Yoga practitioners from across the world could talk about how the practice of YOGA can ignite peace within an individual, their community, nation, and harmony throughout the world. Let us lamp a light of peace at the UN which signifies the power of yoga to unite the world.

This is a global event, we should spread the concept of yoga to all fellow Indians, make yoga compulsory as part of the education system... while a lot of people may oppose yoga has solution to most of today's problems related to stress and unhealthy habits. Government should announce special package for research and development of yoga through centralized unit and promote research to take the science forward that will immensely benefit the mankind. Set up parks and centers for meditation..

Let's promote Yoga as India's gift to the world. As Yogacharya BKS Iyengar said, it belongs to mankind as it promotes good health and peace. Let's absolutely avoid claiming it exclusively as Indian. Other countries have done more to promote it than we have.

The Smithsonian Musuem (Washington DC) curated an exhibition in 2013-2014, YOGA: THE ART OF TRANSFORMATION. This exhibition should be brought to us in India.

In addition, in a same way, all our Embassies abroad can also be asked give a clarion call to all Indians living abroad to join / assemble / congregate at any convenient place & do the same - MASS SURYA NAMASKAR on that day (21st June), which should also help in attracting the attention of the world. Since SURYA NAMASKAR embodies all YOGA postures, it would be an excellent way of celebrating the Int YOGA Day. Moreover, it’s simple to practice as well.
