India is one of the leaders in sustainable development and clean energy. With the Hon PM Narendra Modi-led government’s reform-oriented, environment-friendly policies, the country has time & again shown that sound environmental policies can pave the way to a sound economy.

At the UN Climate Change Conference COP26 in 2021, PM Shri Narendra Modi announced the ‘LiFE’, a mission to bring individual behavioural change at the forefront of the global climate action narrative. LIFE or Lifestyle for Environment along with the ‘Pro Planet People’ movement, aims to strengthen the efforts to overcome climate change.

LiFE will replace the prevailing 'use-and-throw’ thinking with an environmentally conscious lifestyle. The Mission is to create a global community of ‘Pro-Planet People’ (P3), who with their shared commitment will adopt and promote environmentally friendly lifestyles.

Individual Efforts Are Key to Climate Commitment

India's traditional knowledge strongly positions it to lead the narrative of addressing climate change. Like many other mass movements, LiFE aims to inspire climate action based on the mantra of ‘Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas’.

There are various recyclable materials used in daily lifestyles, such as plastic, paper, glass, metal, tires, electronics and textiles. These materials are first collected and brought to the recycling units. In the recycling centres, all substances are first segregated according to their nature and state (solid or liquid) and then reprocessed into fresh and new materials, meant for manufacturing.

Biodegradable waste, such as food waste or garden waste, is also recyclable with the assistance of micro-organisms through composting or anaerobic digestion. Recyclates are sorted and separated into material types. Contamination of the recylates with other materials must be prevented to increase the recylates’ value and facilitate easier reprocessing for the ultimate recycling facility.

Recycling is the reprocessing of materials into new products. Recycling generally prevents the waste of potentially useful materials, reduces the consumption of raw materials and reduces energy usage, and hence greenhouse gas emissions, compared to virgin production. Recycling is a key concept of modern waste management and is the third component of the waste hierarchy. Recyclable materials, also called “recyclables”, may originate from a wide range of sources including the home and industry. They include glass, paper, aluminum, asphalt, iron, textiles and plastics.

Recycling: this occurs when there is garbage already. This means that reducing and reusing are more effective because they do not contribute to the garbage pile-up. In recycling, a person finds raw materials from existing trash and uses them to build something new. While this may reduce the waste, it may not eliminate it.

Reusing: This is an instance where you find a new way of using the things that you want to throw away. For example, old t-shirts can be turned into mops. Used containers can be used to store food in the fridge. Used bottles can be used to store other liquids or beverages.

Reducing: This is where one target to reduce the consumption of something. It all goes down to the things you need. For instance, you can mend your clothes or buy second-hand ones instead of brand new ones.

In an era where we are all trying to save the environment, the most important thing at the back of your mind should be the three R’s. The three R’s are crucial in guiding us on how to go about saving the earth. Human beings produce a lot of trash on a daily basis, and the rate only grows. This poses harm to the environment as well as the living things including human beings.

It’s important to teach students why they should reduce, reuse, recycle. A hands-on activity that shows how different kinds of materials decompose will help bring the concept to life.

The three R's - reduce, reuse and recycle - are three approaches, and the most environmentally preferred. Reducing, reusing and recycling waste helps save landfill space by keeping useful materials out. The amount of energy and natural resources needed to produce or collect the raw materials and manufacture the product are reduced. Greenhouse gas emissions caused by shipping the product to wherever it will be sold are reduced.

Waste is often an unavoidable result of human activity. It occurs in our homes, schools, offices and factories. How we choose to handle that waste affects the air, water and land and the humans, plants and animals that rely on them. It is important that we manage our waste responsibly.
