Atmanirbhar Bharat is the vision of the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi of making India a self-reliant nation. The first mention of this came in the form of the 'Atmanirbhar Bharata Abhiyan' or 'Self-Reliant India Mission' during the announcement of the coronavirus pandemic related economic package on 12 May 2020. This self-reliant policy does not aim to be protectionist in nature and as the Finance Minister clarified, "self-reliant India does not mean cuttingoff from rest of the world".

Providing opportunities to students right from school level to skill themselves through vocational courses will finally provide real education. While it is important to focus on continuing education on the academic front, we must give equal importance to the mental health and well-being of the students.

The biggest highlight is the introduction of vocational courses for children and bagless days in school. Education should ideally be skilling with theory.

Rote learning is passé and with vocational training making headway into mainstream curriculum, a mechanical/electrical engineer can finally fix a motorcycle/fan. Universities will no longer just survive on students’ tuition fees but research funding from corporates and the government will gain prominence

Having championed the inclusion of 21st century skills in the curriculum, things will change, however, much depends on how it is executed

Increased focus on the application of a few core concepts rather than shallow memorisation of a vast syllabus is much needed.
