Bamboo is a crucial element in the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. A grove of bamboo release 35% more oxygen than an equivalent stand of trees. Because of this, planting bamboo is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and help fight global warming. Bamboo is a viable replacement for wood.

Bamboo charcoal can be a game changer. All bamboo species including those which are ‘not directly economically viable’ can be converted into bamboo charcoal and activated carbon. This can tap even those naturally growing species which are considered a nuisance because of their rapid propagation. This will benefit the farmers, green innovators and entrepreneurs alike as activated carbon has a huge market for cosmetics and healthcare products.

A success story in the bamboo value chain can be seen in Nagaland. The Nagaland Bamboo Mission assists the farmers in undertaking plantation in their lands/fields, this directly benefits the farmers. The farmers then sell their raw bamboo to the entrepreneurs engaged in treatment and processing who sell their ‘treated’ bamboo to artisans making handicrafts, furniture, constructions, etc. Then finally, the finished goods are packaged and marketed by entrepreneurial firms, etc.
