I think, the root cause for the negative mentality in having a girl child is heavy dowry system in almost all parts of India - except maharashtrian brahmins. If parents of a girl child have to give dowry in terms of money and goods, which will break them physically and financially and will ultimately lead to their complete collapse, naturally they will not think of having a baby girl - simple remedy to a complex problem!
