Taking serious note of the latest decision of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the Chandigarh Administration has speed up the enforcement of ban imposed on the use of polythene carry bags/plastic bags/plates/cups and other allied material in Union Territory of Chandigarh. As per NGT directions there is also provision of imposing fine of Rs.5, 000/- "Environmental Compensation" to the erring person/entity per event, along with seizure of such stocks.

With the help of this discussion platform the Administration requests you to 'report the violations' (attach pictures or other details) regarding use of plastic carry bag/plate/cup and allied items on ww.mygov.in. Also, we would like to read your suggestions/ideas as well as practical/workable solutions for complete imposition of plastic (carry bag/cup/plate and allied items) ban in Chandigarh.

Viability and commercialization of non-plastic products needs to be encouraged. Currently, plastic has virtually become irreplaceable because it is: 1. Cheap 2. Durable 3. Easily available 4. Relatively low on maintenance The moment natural or natural fibre products can start fulfilling all these attributes, society will automatically start reducing the use of plastic.

Imposing high rate taxes (excise duty etc) and fixing high rates for the plastic items. For example putting the price of a plastic carry bag to ₹5 to ₹10 and then levying duty on it. It will control the frequent use of plastic bags. Likewise on other products also, the same formula can be applied.

MUST READ PLEASE!! GOVERNMENT MUST IMPOSE TAX ON PLASTIC USE-THE COMPANIES/INDUSTRIES WHO USE PLASTIC FOR PACKAGING OR ANY PURPOSE FOR GOODS.TAX SHOULD BE LESS IN PERCENTAGE SO IT CANNOT HAVE MORE CHANGE IN PRICES OF PRODUCT AND JUST HAS BURDEN ON COMPANY ITSELF. THIS WOULD INCREASE GOVERNMENT REVENUE AND REDUCE FISCAL DEFICIT THE GOVT. CAN USE THIS INITIATIVE FOR THE PURPOSE OF ECONOMIC GROWTH,ENVIRONMENTAL WELFARE AS WELL AS SOCIAL AND NATIONAL WELFARE...THANK YOU...

Earlier, about 4 to 5 decades back there was no such huge production of plastics. Now also we can simply correct the use of plastics by stopping production of GRANULES. Oil Producing companies, which are mostly PSUs can be instructed to stop production of plastic granules to avoid further pollution to the Society.

Number of ways to process plastic waste is available- noted among them is to use plastic waste in making tar roads. Requirement is to segregate plastic and non plastic. Fail to understand why city municipalities and state Gov are dragging their feet to implement such easy methods...

This is a great move. I am really in favor of such steps that will reduce pollution and encourage and promote clean and green environment. Certainly alternatives need to be figured out and implemented properly so that shopkeepers and consumers left with some workaround to continue to carry out their business and daily needs effectively.

I think you ahould follow Himachal's example. We have successfully banned use of polythene bags. They imposed it on shopkeepers otherwise fines shall be imposed. We Indians cant be allured by carrots.. Most of us needs sticks. Be strict and simply impose fine on shopkeepers and users and have vigilant officers raid main shopping areas raid once in a week to create fear among everyone. Fear only works in India.
