The role of new and renewable energy has been increasing significantly in recent times with the growing concern for the country's energy security. To achieve energy self-sufficiency, it is necessary to deploy new and renewable energy for supplementing the energy requirements of our country. So, we ask you to suggest ways for encouraging the use of renewable energy on this open discussion forum.

The Indian Railways should devote 10 crores per year to put solar panels on all their stations. With steady investment every year, cost of solar panels will come down and we will be guaranteed power for a minimum of 20 years and very likely more. We will spend less money on importing petrol and diesel.

The government should subsidize 1 kW solar panel for each family. Extra incentives may be given for smaller towns. This will see a major surge in employment all over India for installing solar panels. These solar panels would provide power during peak hours, which is when we have most of the consumption.

For Biogas digester's and roof-top solar power generation we can train the local youth for the maintainence and upkeep which would generate employment and give a flip to the local economy. I read about a NGO renting out solar lanterns for Rs. 1 a day in a remote hamlet and the solar lanterns were maintained by a women's self help group. These are the kinds of models we need to put in place if we want to provide electricity to every single citizen.

Rural areas can have biogas generators that use local waste to generate power as well as provide gas as a cooking medium.Biogas can be used to light up even the remotest hamlets. India get more than 300 days of ample sunshine but we have not been able to harness the energy of the sun.My suggestion is roof-top solar power generation.Incentivize individuals to generate power for their own consumption as well as sell extra power to the utilities.

We should adopt Green energy code for buildings tuned to our climate. Centrally air-conditioned glass faced buildings propping up consumes high amount of energy. Kindly conduct a survey for such building Vs old styled office buildings for energy consumption for two parameters energy consumption per unit volume and per person. This will help us to take a decision to ban construction of such glass faced buildings in future. Also existing buildings must pay extra charge for higher consumption.

Electricity boards to install / maintain grid -tied solar power plants on roof top of public offices Cost per panel for the installation minus subsidy to be worked out. Public may invest for one panel / multiple of that. Average power generated per panel to be worked out. Investor to be given reduction in consumption on their monthly bill based on the number of panels.Investor is free from the hurdles of installation, maintenance, claiming subsidy etc & get benefit reduction of in power bill
