Unsung hero
Sir,
As we know, first war of our independence took place in 1857. However,fight by the farmers of the then Tulunad n Kodagu against British East India company (EIC) took place in 1837.
Details: Due to changed situation in 1799,EiC officials started ill treating farmers. In 1834, Kedambady Ramaiah Gowda, prominent personality of Sulya,along with farmers secretely started collecting arms. In 1837, more than 1000 farmers assembled in Mithoor under his n Kallyanaswamy's leadership. Got control of Treasury at Bellare. Then made 4 teams,main team led by their leadership proceeded to Mangalore. On the way, captured Puttur EIC. They were joined by Bangarasa of Nandavara n his team. Their strength swelled to 10000. They burnt British bunglows n hoisted their flag in Bavatagudde, Mangalore. They were able to defend for 13 days n lost in the fierce battle. 1115 persons were arrested, few hanged in Bikarnakatte.Few including Gowda deported to Singapore in cages meant for animals
