The National Library functions under the Government of India as a subordinate office of the Ministry of Culture. The Director General being the Head of the Department exercises the administrative and financial powers delegated to Heads of the Departments by the Government of India.

At present, the National Library enjoys the status of an institution of national importance under Article 62 in the Seventh Schedule of the Union List of the Indian Constitution. It is the largest library in the country. The National Library is a depository library for all reading and information materials produced in India. It is also a repository of printed materials authored by Indians, and printed materials concerning India but authored by foreigners, wherever published and in whichever language. In 1954 the Delivery of Books (Public Libraries) Act was passed whereby books published in India had to be deposited with the National Library and three other designated public libraries. The Act was amended in 1956 to bring newspapers and periodicals within its purview.

The National Library in collaboration with MyGov is organizing a logo design competition.
