India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

1. Over production may be a one cause of post harvest loss. To over come this some ways and means may be found out. Before harvesting can it be possible to predict what to cultivate and how much the land. So that demand and supply may be balanced. The farmer should get good support price as well as consumor to get benefit.

The best way to pay rich tributes to Gandhi, Patel and Sastry ji is to organize farmer owned F&V cooperative and provide all professional support (not by govt officers and registrars of coops) and create a most modern cold chain, marketing system.

In my view, one of root cause is poor infra structure. If transportation cost is reduced and made more hassle free, this waste will reduce, farmer will get better price, cost to consumer will reduce..

Sir, We should have focused approach towards building the infrastructure for the conservation of agri. products and for that matter we have to provide the subsidies at to one person for building the cold storage in every village on first come first get basis and also make awareness among the farmers for subsidy for the godowns.

I think, we need cold storage of course to stop wastage of food product. But we need a close network between producers (farmers) and seller to remove the intermediates.
