India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

केवल बड़े औधोगिक संस्थान ही नहीं बल्कि निम्न स्तर पर भी बाज़ार तैयार करने चाहिए , स्वदेशी फूड चैन, होटल, ढाबा इत्यादि को इस सप्लाइ चैन का हिस्सा बनाना, हाउसिंग societies, होस्पिटल्स, रोगी कल्याण समिति, mid day meal, आंगनवाड़ी के साथ इनको जोड़ना, इससे न केवल भ्रष्टाचार कम होगा, बल्कि स्थानीय कौशल बड़ेगा और लोगो की entrepreneurial abilities बढ़ेंगी। EAT LOCAL EAT SEASONAL का नारा बुलंद करना।

transportation facilities must be increased. hindrences in transportation from govt. departments should be removed. transportation from one state to another should be made easy paper work should be reduced to minimum. toll taxes should be abolished.

By increasing the skill of post harvest value addition of their product, it has to be integrated with the existing education system, how to make achars, chutneys, jams, squash. establishing fruit and vegetable cooperatives in sub-urbs and villages in their catchment areas so that less distance supply chain will help in price stablization and minimize losses. Warehousing and cold storage are immediate measures but skill upgradation and market access will have far reaching results in this area.

Every farmer and retailers in India should come to know about cold storages and they can be provided to them.After that they should be aware of how to use it

KANBAN system should be applied across from first storage location to the last storage chain. This is an old proven Japanese method which helps to reduce waste In the system and manage better. Many big private and public limited companies have been using this method successfully to manage inventory

Digitalise the cold storages for every usage and stored. Increase no of cold storages. Ensure acountability and time bound actions taken by officers, clerks.

Govt. should set-up institution/departments with the help of State Govt.'s were farmers should get registered through local officers of village/town with details like farmer details, farming area Crop/vegetables,quantity of production, the farmers should inform in advance when the harvesting is due & the information officer should accumulate all the area farmers details in database to group farmer with similar cultivation - Govt. should charge nominal fee from sellers & arrange proper logistics

Hoarding should be discouraged by compelling each store to release on weekly basis a must and non compliance should become a punishable offence. Quality should be checked by QC officials.

All such vegetable banks should release proportionately the stored items after the harvest and storage is over on daily or weekly basis must. So that the prices will remain stable.
