India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

Late the cold storage centrally for each block.Encourage people to deposit vegetables / fruits in such storages. these places should be called perishable commodity bank.

there should be more numbers of cold storages in rural areas.People should take their produce to cold storages to keep on nominal/ actual charges. This will reduce damages and save the producers.Food items will not rot.

can the manger of this website tell as to who decide the topics in this open forum. The public also should be allowed to participate in deciding the topic. The country biggest problem is corruption. i have seen in Railway dept. plateforms are clean up to 80% and bogies are so clean.some voluntiers have share in cleaning,so SWACHHATA Abhiyan is more success in railway .station Rajnandgaon to Naila'

Cont... We should also develop low cost Cold Storage system and these can even be owned by farmers co-operatives at Village / Panchayat / Block levels, thereby wastage and losses of the perishable goods can be minimized and farmers can get good prices all across. Also they will not have to cough up a huge price for private Cold Storage and vegetables/fruits can be supplied for a longer duration, thereby avoiding any artificial crisis and shortage propaganda by middlemen.........

Wow.......what a topic indeed. Everyday we face a scenario where the fruits and vegetables are sold at much higher rates in Metros/Big cities and at a very low rate near places these are grown. This is a harsh reality and needs to be addressed. Farmers barely get the return on their hard work and investment and major profit is shared by middlemen. Why we are unable to develop Panchayat, Taluka and district level Haats and Bazars where farmers can bring their harvest and get good returns??

emphasis should be given in exporting the excess vegetable productions to the neighbour countries. control over the markets thorugh proper storing provisions.overflow should be checked.propagandas to be controlled. as it cause panic among the farmers.kissan help line to extend support on this regard. awareness to raise. jai hind
