India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

The most imp will be data collection. First we have to collect about the requirement of fruits and vegetable in a particular place and occasions. When we come to know demand then we can send the produce at that place directly by suitable transport so that we are not wasting our energy. And the product will be reached to the place where it is required. Second we need staggered planting and harvesting. Thank you

There are many techniques of fruit and vegetables preservation but not popular among people because of operational complications and lack of simplicity of process. Often the output is not of any worth to the person concerned. Now it should be attempted to preserve vegetables or fruits for later use of the public for their domestic needs. Women should be encouraged to learn simple techniques of drying and storing seasonal vegetables and country fruits using ordinary techniques and home equip.

In urban areas, real estate and construction sector is quite regulated. We just talk about rain water harvesting. However, while giving approvals to real estate projects, why don't we make it mandatory for builders and thereafter society to have provision for rain water harvesting in the upcoming projects? Water management, as a subject, should also be included in curriculum for secondary education. We are not using the education as a tool appropriately.

The post harvest losses in supply chain of fruits and vegetables occur due to various reasons and the same can be reduced if those are identified and the various persons handling the same are made aware of that. The first loss appears at the collection point of the produce because of shortage of man power or untrained persons doing it,the shortage of storage at the collection point, shortage of proper packing material, transportation availabilityfor shifting the product to market, weather factor
