India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

we can reduce post harvest losses of fruits and vegetables by making cold storage near each and every cities having at least population of 50 lac. we are not able to utilise the food produce properly reason behind we are always facing inflation in rate. I think India produces sufficient qty of Potato and if we can manage the produce post harvesting we can have check in price rising.

I have observed that PSUs are not doing concrete for the cleanliness, they should not only clean their offices but they have to do cleanliness in nearby areas also. This is being taken as rituals. they should be instructed that a certain radius is also their resposibilty and in particular area the PSUs should form inter PSU team to oversee the cleanliness. I have seen where many PSUs offices , there is no coordination between them regarding cleanliness of nearby area

India has not focused on cold chain logistics and its highly required for perishable items. Another element is storage and packaging of these perishable items. Each and every entity involved should know the threshold of the product and lead time for it to reach a particular location. Proper training need to be imparted to farmers, laborers, packers, logistic providers, warehouse managers etc. Have approachable wholesale markets for both seller as well as buyer to reduce the loss.
