India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

Taking an estimate cost due to such loss, tht. Amt should be before hand utilised in proper packaging and predervating transports like cold truck or flights, this may be expensive bt indirectly we are paying by incurring such loss apart from that biotech must be imphasised in agriculture at larger scale

There is no need to reinvent the wheel. The wheel is the Amul Model of Cooperative system for F&V. Today middle men suck all the money and cheat both producer and consumer. Even during winter times the tender coconut is costing 25 rupees, whereas the farmer is given not more than 10 rupees a nut or even less than that!!!! Modi govt should ensure that Amul Model of cooperatives are established throughout the country.

The best and prove method is already available through Anand Pattern Dairy Cooperatives. There is so much resistance to adopt this pattern for all agricultural produce. Fruit and vegetable model in the name of Safal is demonstrated but was not carried forward. The modified version is the Mother Dairy F&V of the NDDB. We need to build cooperative cold chain in a strategic location so that the nearby produce can be stored there for carrying and forwarding.

1) Being seasonal and perishable item, it require cold storage for preservation 2) Under CSR activities, construct cold storage in nearby to reduce transport expenses 3) Free transportation to cold storage and proper demarcation in cold storage for each farmer 4) After harvesting the middlemen purchase at lower rate, (being available in plenty), hoard in cold storage and sale during scarcity with high rate. Hence cold storage and transportation to farmers is barely necessary.

Empowering farmers to value their produce will give them the confidence on their hard work... Sometimes price fixing on commodity produce gets driven by govt-mafia nexus. Open valuation will help a long way. Hoarders, middle men should be avoided if opportunity for mafia exists. Good storage facility controlled by govt agency directly and quality assured and.making it accessible will help farmers take confidence in produce who may be taken for ransom by hoarders!

I have heard of bank robbery where many people have lost their wealth which was stored in bank locker.Bank is not compensating them because their is no such record they keep.I wonder where a common man will put his savings other than money, when even bank locker is not safe. Therefore I will request that every bank should take insurance against all possible type of risks.And also install CCTV camera in such sensible places which is monitored by a Centralized Department 24x7.

Sir Govt can encourage construction of Cold Storage houses all along the National & State Highways by leasing the Land, subsidizing power and making connectivity to interior rural areas for collection. Cold storage vehicles can also be given concessions. Transportation, Distribution, Marketing and Export logistics can be improved to further the activity. Also e-sales and home delivery entrepreneurs can be encouraged in Urban townships. This improves employment too. .
