India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

CHINA AND PAKISTAN ARE DAILLY THREATENING INDIA FOR SOME REASON OF THE OTHER, WHY WE DONOT DEAL STRICTLY WITH BOTH CHINA AND PAKISTAN. WE HAVE TO BEHAVE LIKE ISRAEL AND EYE FOR AN EYE ATTITUDE HAS TO BE ADOPTED, THERE IS NO MEANING OF FREINDSHIP, DIPOLMACY, TRADE WITH 2 ENEMIES OF INDIA. IT IS A WASTE OF TIME. MONEY AND ENERGY.

Post Harvest losses in supply chain of fruits and vegetables can be reduced if more community oriented LOCAL markets are opened. This reduces transportation cost, and also easy accessibilty. Long transport of such vegetables and fruits ought to be avoided. These days, many merchants are storing potatoes in frozen storage which increases the sugar levels in potatoes many times over.

PROBLEM IS AFTER COMPLETION OF 150 DAYS OF THIS NEW NDA GOVT. THERE HAS BEEN VERY LITTLE TO DISCUSS OF ACHIEVEMENTS. THERE ARE 100 ACTIONS WHICH COULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN BY THE GOVT. BUT NONE WERE TAKEN. STYLE OF FUNCTIONING IS SAME AS OF UPA GOVT. , NOTHING HAS CHANGED ON THE GROUND. ACHE DIN ABHI TAK NAHI AAYE HEIN.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES HAVE A SHELF LIFE, YPU CANNOT STORE THEM AFTER A LIMITED PERIOD OF TIME, THAT MEANS YOU HAVE TO SELL THEM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THERE HAS TO BE A MECHANISM WHERE BY FARMERS ARE ABLE TO SELL THEM AT A REASONABLE PRICE TO A SELLER /MANDI. GOVT. HAS TO WORK OUT THIS OUTLET.

( 7) Not all products are amenable to modern ways of food-processing/ packages w/out loss of taste nutrition etc. EVEN cold-storages alter tastes obtained in 'farm-Fresh' produce! Preservatives are harmful to health. Hence, in the case of vegetable & fruits production & marketing, the States are Major players (shall I say, they "ALONE"?) & instead of Centre spending time & effort in this matter,transfer whole subject to "States" as 100% State-subject!"CENTRE has nothing to do.Let States handle".

( 7 ) Alternatively, instead of one big bad 'WALMART' let there be tens of Indian Walmarts ( They exist in limited scale now: - for example, Reliance fresh). We know that apples need particular geo-areas to grow; or coconuts can grow well near sea-shores; mangoes need unique soil- so too some other vegetables/ fruits. Hence, apart from communication, good transport models must be put in place to reach markets far away from places of production. Our PM talks of packing, food-processing etc.

( 6) Some time ago, kitchen farming/ rooftop farming/ urban farming etc were talked about. With people not finding time to sit before TVs to watch their favourites, we cannot expect such things! Next best thing is, ear-mark places near big cities to grow Vegetables/ fruits that can grow seasonally on say 300 to 500 acres of Agri. land. We know that urban centres are famous for "producing Copious sewage!" Use it to irrigate captive farms after treating it. "It brings Market and producer closer!"

( 5 ) Unlike other commodities, perishables need markets nearer to the places of production. With the way our urbanization is going, green-fields are disappearing faster. There is no one to control things- All are Kings/ Queens in unfolding PLAY harming lives of public through haphazard urbanization. Now, one should not complain too, if one destroys all forms of planned development when shortages/ destruction of produce occurs, is it not? One can't have cake& eat it too.
