India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

ALL FRUIT JUICES ARE VERY TASTY.Many vegetable juices are also very tasty.THE SOLIDS REMAINING ARE ALSO VERY NUTRITIOUS.All homes should have an electrical or a manual juicer.All restaurants;small, medium ,big, jumbo; whether in a city or in a village,on a railway/ bus station platform or near a street should supply fruit and vegetable juices and products prepared from the remaining solids. As the fruit juices contain many anti-oxidants and the solids contain good fiber- the items -very healthy

better storage facility n transport system. govt should create more storage facilities across the region to support farmers. each gram panchayat should have advanced storage facility.

Improving of distribution facilities,increase of storage facilities,direct link with farmer ,removing red tapism ,also removal of middleman will help the cause.

Adequate number of small non energy consuming storage facilities ( example : MITTI-COOL) should be installed in every village in strategic locations which can store vegetables upto 2-3 days. These should be integrated with logistics of storage in larger facilities.

IN ALL AGRI RELATED MARKETING ACTIVITIES, THE ROLE OF MIDDLE MEN SHOULD BE ELIMINATED. THESE MIDDLE MEN ARE EXPLOITING THE WEAK BARGAINING POWER OF THE FARMERS WITH THE SUPPORT (DIRECT/INDIRECT) OF POLITICAL AND OTHER REGULATING AUTHORITIES WHO ACTS AGAINST THE INTEREST OF FARMER COMMUNITY. IF THE SALE PROCEEDS ARE CORRECTLY PRICED, THE POST HARVEST LOSSES COULD BE REDUCED.

Innovative Technology + Smart Infrastructure (Storage & Transportation) can immensely improve the supply chain of fruits & vegetables. For e.g. Think of a system which gives the information on quantity of fruits available across india + requirement of fruits needed across different parts of india. With this basic & accurate information in our hand we can plan better on where to store how much and also bring down the cost of fruits and vegetables.

Today most of the vegetables and fruits are transported in some open vehicles, bcoz of which vegetables suffer different problems like shocks bcoz of bad roads, dust, rain,temperature etc. so to avoide all this we need to have a proper transportation system actually some different standards should be made for this and moreover a proper standards should be made for storing these vegetables. I am sure this will lead to decrease in wastage of vegetables and fruits.

Today's News-item in a Tamil daily says that, 1000 banana-growers have formed an association to get good prices for their produce & to help locate nearest buyers and sellers easily, using modern communication facilities."THIS IS WHAT IS needed!"It is totally private entrepreneurial effort 'to bolster-up their business & sell produce for a good price with least losses/ damages' too.Farmers must form such societies within themselves;this is urgent need in areas near big cities to sell vegetables.
