India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

Start Fruits & Veg co-operative societies one in each district, similar to Milk co-operative societies which are successful in all regions of country. Create collection centers at-least one in each village. Govt should fix the price of each fruit & vegetable, buy directly from framers with that price in each collection centers and send it to co-operative factory. Here make packing and export goods should go to ports, and sell it to local markets like milk selling. Start with one or two fruits.

The core of the problem is the bad design of cities and highways. This leads to excesive costing and reduces the options for saving the edibles. The flaw lies in the planning level itself

Taxation & Black Money: Taxation in India seems to to inefficient as only a few are in the tax net and majority are not contributing for nation building. Why cant we exempt all individual incomes from tax and charge tax only on expenditure. This will bring all Indians in the tax net based on spending capacity. Automatically, rich will be taxed more and poor less. Burden of taxation/Nation building will be shared by all Indians. This Idea needs to be given thought by experts.

1. There should be complete transparency in allotment of funds for cold storage. Why a poor can't open a cold storage or a processing unit? 2. Processing Units should be open very near to production area only and preferance should be given to actual farmers 3. On Small scale, enrouragement for cold storge and processing unit should be done with tie-up with the best transporation company 4. Before fruit production, a master plan should be shared with the involved farmer, processing unit expert, cold storage head and transportation company and the distributors/export company. And the complete cycle should ONLY be monitored by Block level govt officials. 5. With PP model, required infrasture should be developed.

Cold storages are essential for extending the shelf life, period of marketing, avoiding glut, reducing transport bottlenecks during peak period of production and maintenance of quality of fruits and vegetables. The development of cold storage industry has therefore an important role to play in reducing the wastages of the perishable commodities and thus providing remunerative prices to the growers. Good road Infrastructure can also clear the bottlenecks in logistic management.

there is no participation of farmers in creation of storage and transportation systems of fruits and vegetables, from producers to consumer. the non-farmers, who are framing policies at central, state government levels, are the real culprits in post harvest losses. so suggestion is include farmers in decision making. second is that let us expedite national common market of goods and services(ST regime) and create zero obstacles (physical, bureaucratic, tax) movement system of these items.
