In December 2014 the United Nations declared 21st June as ‘International Day of Yoga’ after 177 nations across all continents of the world co-sponsored a resolution seeking the same.

When the resolution was adopted, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed immense joy on this and said that Yoga has the power to bring the entire humankind together. It may be recalled that the Prime Minister had mooted such an idea during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2014.

You are requested to provide inputs on the following aspects relating to the marking of the first ever ‘International Day of Yoga’.

(1) How can the ‘International Day of Yoga’ be celebrated at the UN forum?

(2) Suggest creative ways in which the ‘International Day of Yoga’ can be celebrated at the world stage.

(3) What are ways in which we can mark the ‘International Day of Yoga’ across the length and breadth of India?

Best inputs and suggestions would be sent to the Prime Minister himself and would also be utilized.

Congratulations Modiji. This is amazing success on your part giving a precious gift to the world community. Government should take the leadership to create curriculum to learn Yoga(Very Structured Manner step by step) so World's institution can adopt it and implement it with success. May be our Yogis can come to unit to create such course which is freely available in different ways. (website, manuals, videos etc)

I would congratulate the Modi Government for this. The school children should be enrolled and mass yoga programmes should be held and a world should be set.

It is a good idea to show different Yoga posture at public places to aware public about Yoga, On that Day at least mass surya namaskar must be held at all schools and offices..

To start with, Yoga should be made compulsory in schools (primary and secondary) and colleges for students and teachers. For the people working in offices they should be encouraged practicing yoga at least 15 minutes per day / at least an hour per week. However, this cannot be achieved without good Yoga teachers and for that more people should be encouraged for the same.

(3) We can mark IYD across the length and breadth of India in a natural, unifying way a suggestion would be for each State to practice Surya Namaskaram, to the Great Sun. Indians can start their day on June 21st with the Pranayam to Surya to bestow the fortune of good thoughts, words, and actions to attain a strong physical body and sound mind to bring forth a shining Bharat. Being an Indian-American, this would bring me immense pride and I can help to lead this movement in my own Mother land.

(2) IYD can celebrate on the World stage by practicing ‘Ahmisa’. We all have one unifying title in common – we all are citizens of the World. That being said, we can make a pledge of non-violence on IYD towards oneself, each another, and the beautiful environment we all share. Furthermore, we can have Yoga seminars at each Nation’s capital and on the web that delivers education around the term ‘Ahmisa’ to provide a platform for open discussion on how we all can contribute to the greater good.

(1) International Yoga Day can be celebrated at the UN Forum by hosting a dynamic event whose theme is Unite Peace Within. Unite Peace Within would solidify the very purpose of the United Nations by promoting peace and security beginning with oneself, and educate the attendees of the very purpose of yoga – to unite within. Unite Peace Within could host a panel of Yoga experts where practitioners can discuss the various roles Yoga can ignite peace within an individual, community, nation & world.

(3) Yoga asanas start with the Sun, the unconditional giver of the Universe. Each state's capital can broadcast a yogi practicing Surya Namaskar at their sunrise on June 21st. Each Indian throughout the length and breadth of Bharat can start their day with pranams to Surya to bestow the fortune: of good thoughts, words, actions; to attain a strong body and sound mind to bring forth a solid India. I would love to help as my nationality is Indian, ethnicity is American, who has a yoga business.

(2) The wellbeing of the world is shared with all living beings across the world. On International Yoga Day we can unite through Patanjali's Yoga Sutra principal of ahisma. We can all make a pledge of ahisma on International Yoga Day for non-violence toward one-self, one another, animals, the environment and the world we live in. Yoga classes at each nation's capitol can be taught representing this principal to each country across the world.
