Poor science and maths education (and English) accounts for 80 per cent of total students who fail in Tenth Board Examination. The low enrolment in science stream at higher secondary level and poor-quality education is a constraint in development of scientific manpower in the country. Science and Maths education would need special attention. We need to deliberate and find workable strategies for strengthening the quality of teaching–learning processes for better outcomes; innovations and diversity of approaches in matters of curricula, pedagogies and use of technology to improve the learning levels.

Government school are the back bone for education in rural areas. Quality of teaching in government schools should be the main focus. Accountability and responsibility of the teachers and principles should be streamlined. Once the quality is improved poor people will not spend their hard earned money to send their children to bad private schools. Private school also will have to step up and improve their quality. So, it would be an overall improvement.

Agastya international foundation has started science centers in various villages that cater to the needs of government school children in the neighborhood. Their model can be copied and scaled up nationally to include every single village in India. Having seen children from villages get excited to see the model of solar system, understand the concept of day and night, I know that it is important to protect and safeguard their curiosity and enthusiasm right up to the college education.

Centre should set the syllabus and subjects to be taught in schools. States should enforce this syllabus so that we can have an uniform education system in India. States can include their respective regional languages in the syllabus. Care should be taken when setting the subjects and syllabus because we are still following centuries old system of Lord Macaulay and it is high time we changed this.

An NGO based in Andhra Pradesh - namely Agastya International Foundation works with students in government schools to impart scientific temperament and encourage innovation. They have mobile vans fitted with science experiment models relevant to school children. They have also come up with similar boxes that can be fitted on mobikes so that instructors can go to remote villages to show case hands-on activities and experiments for school children. Their concept can be easily replicated.

In CBSE board in science and maths, there is a lot of difference in syllabus of 9th-10th class and 11th-12th class. Make it a balanced one like include some chapters of 11th in that of 10th books. This will decrease the workload on students.

Have different choices in various streams to be chosen in class 11 for cbse. eg., science stream should have following: Phy+maths+chem+eco, phy+maths+chem+comp., Phy+maths+chem+geography/geology, Phy+maths+eco+geography/geology, Phy+maths+astronomy and like this to choose students interest. include these subjects as choices in IITs and other engineering colleges. This will also help students to have competitive edge.

Skill development, the term is used now a days very casually. During my school days i often thought what's the use of studying those subjects which i had to study. i organize career talk programme in schools. i notice the same problem with the pupils even these day. they seldom have any kind of skill or any idea of skill to work professionally. i think first of all we have to start with material knowledge for for school education.
