Taking serious note of the latest decision of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the Chandigarh Administration has speed up the enforcement of ban imposed on the use of polythene carry bags/plastic bags/plates/cups and other allied material in Union Territory of Chandigarh. As per NGT directions there is also provision of imposing fine of Rs.5, 000/- "Environmental Compensation" to the erring person/entity per event, along with seizure of such stocks.

With the help of this discussion platform the Administration requests you to 'report the violations' (attach pictures or other details) regarding use of plastic carry bag/plate/cup and allied items on ww.mygov.in. Also, we would like to read your suggestions/ideas as well as practical/workable solutions for complete imposition of plastic (carry bag/cup/plate and allied items) ban in Chandigarh.

As a Jute Technologist by Education and Profession, the Jute bags are the only substitute to replace the Plastic bags.Though initially the cost of jute bags is much more but the economy in keeping the environment clean and healthy,by resorting to jute bags will balance the extra cost of jute bags.We may link Jute Mills with a number of cities who want to get rid of Plastic bags and the extra cost may be balanced by imposing a small cleansing Tax on the city Population

To remove plastic bags effectively government have to provide a alternative packaging and biodegradable plastic is only suitable alternate, it is accepted by NGT but CPCB has decided not to repect the NGT verdict given by NGT principal bench on 8th August, 2013 and eventually no one from chandigarh administration or pollution control board, chandigarh is interested in having a proper alternate. If anyone there who could help me with this. Please contact me at er.abhinav.guleria@gmail.com.

GOI must also restrict courier services, e-commerce companies stop accepting/sending various items/ contents in plastic covers, instead they may encouraged to use carton boxes for their use. GOI may put a ban on plastic covers for postal dept, courier services, e-commerce companies which are major users of plastic, from 22nd April which is celebrated as International Earth Day.This would be true tribute to our mother EARTH. By doing so important medical items may be allowed in plastic covers.

Plastic ban is incorrect look at recycling inform people on bifurcation of waste. Plastic is part and parcel of our daily life. The entire grocery comes in plastic packets. Milk comes in plastic bags, your Sunday mutton comes in plastic bags. Indiscipline is our biggest enemy. Tell people to segregate garbage at home. For that you have to maintain 3 dustbins at home. Encourage recycling.

Plastic are almost irreplaceable currently, however we need to promote use of recycled plastics and proper system need to set up right from grass root level to disintegrate waste from recyclable waste. Bio-plastic as per me is not a option since with bio-plastic we are creating more plastic in ecological system which with time pose its own problem. We should make sure strict standards need to be set for quality of plastic that has to adhere too.

Plastic is not bad, but the way its being used is bad. Reusing plastic bags is a good idea, Govt. must impose ban on think plastic carry bags strictly and that too at manufacturing stage. We are using /reusing plastic bags for years now and possibly there could be bags which are 5-6 years old still working fine. Municipal corp. should reuse thrown away plastic in road construction, why no one is thinking. In the name of environment why we start thinking of culling poor people's earning.
